Today’s Cup 223 was purchased at Starbucks, zip code 97071. It was just another ordinary day, a cup of kindness for the driver of the red SUV behind me, but another bittersweet reminder of the reason behind this blog. As I drove off, sipping my own latte, and hoping the driver liked her surprise cup of goodwill, I reflected on the inspiration behind this blog which started about eighteen months ago. At that time, I was so deeply saddened by the tragic school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. As described in my about section of this blog, the inspiration for this 365 Cups of Kindness blog, came about during that time.
As I drove off, I was reminded that we are not immune to violence, tragedy, and loss. For reasons so out of our control and understanding we sometimes face the seemingly unimaginable. Here in my home state, we suffered a tragic loss through a recent incident of school violence at Reynolds High School in Troutdale, OR. Though these events defy explanation, we find that they can bring us closer, sometimes serving as a galvanizing force for us to appreciate the frailty of humanity, our connectedness, and compassion. Through this, I want to be reminded, no one’s life is ever in vain, we all matter, and we do possess the strength, know-how, and ability to develop solutions for creating the safe and compassionate world in which we all hope to live.
With this, I wish you all well. May you be blessed by the kindness of strangers, or perhaps may you be inspired to be the one serving up the cup of compassion. Here’s to another day, and another round, of Fully Caffeinated Generosity and Hope. May God bless you and those whom you grace with kindness.
