Today’s Cup 87 was transacted at Starbucks, zip code 97303. As I ordered my soy latte, I noticed a State of Oregon car in my rearview. I imagined the two ladies in the worn green Honda needing a pick-me-up, on their way to cubicle-land somewhere downtown in our state’s capital. As a busy educator, who runs on a daily diet of adrenaline and caffeine, I admit to possessing some unfounded assumptions about how the real business world works, like thinking a cubicle would drive me nuts. I like my unpredictable and action-packed job.
As I pulled up to the service window, my favorite barista, Mack, quickly rang up my soy latte and the order for the green Honda; needing no explanation, all too familiar with the daily drill. As he swiped my coffee app, he mentioned the order behind me: a banana smoothie and banana bread for about six bucks. I made some wise-crack about it being a banana-themed day and he quickly replied: “Hey, that can be your blog theme for the day!”. Yep, of course…and what a funny order, I thought. I don’t know why, but it just seemed funny, only because a banana smoothie is one of the most unlikely of drinks I’d choose to fuel my busy Mach II school principal pace.
We laughed a bit and I smiled. I hoped those ladies enjoyed the cup of kindness–on the way to office, or otherwise. It was another joyful slam-dunk in the journey of Fully Caffeinated Generosity and Hope. Until tomorrow, and until that next shot of kindness, whether banana-flavored or not.
