Today’s cup of goodwill was transacted at Starbucks, zip code 97303. The drive-thru was busy midday, and as I pulled in, I noticed a white Volkswagen GTI in my rear-view. I ordered my usual soy latte and asked the barista to ring up the other patron’s total. It was a measly $1.99, representative of a lightweight coffee drinker. No frappuccinos, extra shots, or fancy lattes for that driver. But all good, nonetheless.
As the barista thanked me for paying for the patron in my rear-view, I asked her to tell the driver behind me that I liked their car. She smiled, gave me a funny look, and I quickly replied: “They’re sort-of my car twin, except mine’s black.” She chuckled a bit and then thanked me again. She may not have fully understood my intent, but for fellow Volkswagen aficionados, it’s clear. We love our Volkswagens, especially our GTIs. These zippy little cars have a loyal following. Those turbo engines combined with brilliant Direkt-Schalt-Getriebe transmissions are almost as good as one’s daily shot of espresso, for sure. So here’s to another day of Fully Caffeinated Generosity and Hope. Until tomorrow, and until another cup of coffee in the perfect car cup holder, worthy of that caffeinated goodness.
